Finding Something Specific Shouldn't Be This Hard

By Sarah Jane Burns

I volunteer with a befriending project, which means once a week I spend a couple of hours with a young person doing something together. It's a commitment I look forward to, and one of the best parts is sharing new things for us to do across the region.

But finding those things turned out to be far harder than it should have been.

What I needed was straightforward enough: something suitable for a young person, happening after school hours, in a specific area, on a specific day of the week. That's four simple filters. Day of the week. Time of day. Area. Type of activity. Nothing complicated.

What I found instead was the experience of jumping between Facebook groups, checking individual venue websites, scrolling through long lists of events that were great but not in the area I was looking, on the wrong day, or already over. There was no single place I could go and say: show me what's on for young people in this area on a Wednesday afternoon.

That experience stayed with me when I was building Events DG. Because I knew it wasn't just me. In the survey I ran before building the platform, hundreds of people across D&G described exactly the same frustration in different ways. Too many places to look. Events that had already happened. No way to narrow things down to what was actually relevant.

So filtering became one of the things I was most focused on getting right.

On Events DG you can filter events by category, by area, and by date. If you're looking for family-friendly activities in Kirkcudbright on a Saturday, you can find those specifically. If you're looking for health and wellbeing events in the Glenkens in the next fortnight, you can find those too. You're not scrolling through everything hoping something relevant appears — you're going straight to what's actually useful to you.

For me, that would have meant being able to find an after-school activity near us on a Wednesday in about thirty seconds, rather than an hour of searching. And for the young person that's another great experience for them that week.

That's the kind of practical difference good filtering makes. Not just convenience — genuine access to things that are happening right now, in the right place, for the right people.
