Explore Burns's writing about nature and the environment with acclaimed historians and authors, Neil Baxter & Mary Craig.
Join us at Ellisland Museum & Farm on Wednesday 17 June, 2–4pm, for Of Mice and Mountain Daisies: Burns and Nature, a fascinating workshop exploring Robert Burns’s deep connection to the natural world through his life and poetry.
Led by acclaimed authors and historians Neil Baxter and Mary Craig, this special event will examine how Burns experienced nature not simply as an observer, but as a poet whose daily life at Ellisland was shaped by the land, the River Nith and the rhythms of rural life.
Described by Burns himself as “the poet’s choice”, Ellisland was the place where he found “sweet poetic ground” and produced some of his most inspired writing. Here, surrounded by woodland, orchards and riverside walks, Burns wrote of hares, mice, daisies and the changing seasons with empathy, humour and humanity. As both poet and farmer, he understood the fragile relationship between people and the natural world — a connection that still resonates today.
This workshop invites participants to see nature through Burns’s eyes and discover how the landscapes of Ellisland shaped the writing of Scotland's national bard.
